Mummified Pathogen

A group of scientists from EURAC in Bolozano/Bozen and the University of Vienna have discovered non-human DNA in a hip sample from the famous Otzi mummy. Researchers have identified it as the pathogen, Treponema denticola - a virus involved in the development of periodontal disease, an affliction affecting the tissue of the teeth.  The discovery supports the theory that early humans were common suffers of the disease - a factor which may have contributed to their relatively short lifespans.
